Songs disappeared from your Spotify playlist? Why it happens

Last checked

Songs usually don’t vanish at random. There are four common causes, and the first two don’t actually delete anything.

1. They are hidden because they are unplayable

When a track stops being available in your country (licensing, an artist pulling their catalog), Spotify greys it out — and some apps hide unplayable songs entirely. On mobile, look in Settings for “Show unplayable songs” (under Content and display or Playback, depending on the app version). The desktop app shows them greyed out.

2. The song was re-released

Labels sometimes re-upload an album. The new version is a different track to Spotify, so your playlist still points at the old, now unavailable one. Search for the song and add the new version.

3. A sync conflict brought back an older version

If you edit a playlist on one device while another is offline, the older copy can win when it syncs. Community moderators suggest reconnecting, clearing the app cache or reinstalling — and Spotify Support for restoring the earlier state.

4. Someone else changed it

Collaborators can add, remove and reorder tracks in a collaborative playlist, and anyone with access to your account can edit everything. Check who can edit the playlist and which devices are signed in to your account.
